What we have here is an antique Texas stoneware mini jug and it's called a scratch jug because the advertising was just scratched onto it after the jug was fired and glazed. The jug reads, "Old Nelson County For Sale By Chance Brothers, Bryan, Texas." Old Nelson County was a Kentucky whiskey and I do not know who the Chance brothers were or what their store was. You would assume that it was a general store or some kind of perhaps a pharmacy, dry goods or a liquor store. Interestingly enough, a lot of times, these little mini jugs were given away as souvenirs or as just little trinkets for people as advertising. So just because it says Old Nelson County on the jug doesn't mean that there was actually whiskey in it.
